Product Introduction:
Nano silica, also known as nano silicon dioxide (SiO2), is an advanced nanomaterial characterized by its extremely small particle size, large specific surface area, and high surface activity. It is widely used as a reinforcing, thickening, and anti-settling agent in various industries due to its excellent dispersibility, thermal stability, and chemical inertness. Alfa Chemistry is committed to providing nano silica for applications in the rubber and coatings industries.

In the rubber industry, nano silica serves as an effective reinforcing filler that enhances mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and aging stability while maintaining elasticity. Its fine particle structure improves the dispersion of other fillers and reduces rolling resistance in tire formulations. In coatings, nano silica improves scratch resistance, hardness, and surface smoothness. It also enhances anti-settling behavior, UV stability, and weather resistance, providing coatings with superior durability and performance across diverse environmental conditions.

  • Applications and Reinforcing Mechanism

Nano silica serves as a reinforcing and anti-aging additive in rubber products, enhancing strength, toughness, abrasion and fire resistance, and prolonging service life.

As a reinforcing filler for silicone rubber, nano silica improves strength due to its nanoscale size, high specific surface area, and abundant surface silanol groups, which enable network formation through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. It also interacts strongly with polydimethylsiloxane, optimizing interfacial properties. The degree of reinforcement depends on particle size, surface area, and structural features—smaller, higher-surface-area, and well-structured particles provide greater strength and hardness in vulcanized rubber.

Research has demonstrated that incorporating 2% nano silica into coatings can markedly improve their hardness, adhesion, weather resistance, viscosity, anti-settling properties, and overall stability. The suggested addition level is typically between 0.5% and 2%, though for some specialized formulations, the content may exceed 10%, depending on the specific system and application needs.

  • Key Benefits
  • Scrub Resistance: Nano silica can boost the scrub resistance of coatings to tens of thousands of cycles.
  • Weather Resistance: Incorporating the right amount of nano silica significantly enhances UV aging resistance in standard coatings.
  • Stain Resistance and Self-Cleaning: Coating performance can be improved by (1) leveraging nano silica's microporous structure to form complementary nanoscale surface patterns that trap air and create a protective gas layer, and (2) surface-treating silica particles to make them amphiphilic or superhydrophobic, improving water repellency and reducing dust adhesion.
  • Transparency: Nano silica maintains the clarity of nanomodified coatings while enhancing abrasion resistance, allowing for highly wear-resistant transparent finishes.
  • Hardness: When dispersed uniformly, nano silica particles act like rigid chains, reinforcing organic matrices and increasing the hardness of UV-cured coatings.
  • Thermal Stability: Nano silica can raise the glass transition temperature of UV-cured coating films.
  • Viscosity: The inclusion of nano silica also increases coating viscosity.
